A few days ago a discussion took place on the page of Yassin Al-Haj Saleh at Facebook. Y. Al-Haj Saleh, who had spent in the past 16 years in the prisons of the Syrian Regime, is a well known Syrian writer and activist whom the supporters of the Revolution like to dub: the Wise man of the Revolution. I took part in the discussion which centred on a video showing the Shabiha (the hired mercenaries and killers of the Syrian regime) committing unspeakable atrocities against their captors. The young men were tortured with terrible sadism and subjected to mutilations and stabbing before they were finally crushed to death with boulders. Many people who took part in the debate were understandably very disturbed and appalled by what they saw the Shabiha committing and thought that such video should not ne shown. At that point in the discussion something within me cried and I asked: Are we horrified because the Shabiha are killing our young men or because human beings are doing this to their fellow human beings? It is the latter which consumes me. The people who committed such atrocities, weren’t they born to human mothers? Didn’t they drink the milk of human kindness? Weren’t they raised in the lap of humanity surrounded by brothers and sisters, by aunts and uncles, by parents who protected and shielded them and taught them that cannibalism literally and metaphorically is taboo?

I wish to know what disjointedness in time and place, what a process of regression, returns such renegades to primordial savagery and primeval brutality when the great predators roamed the earth? Therefore let us cling to our humanity and let us ask ourselves: Does it only take one corrupt and evil regime to wrench away their humanity from those Shabiha and return them to the prehistoric jungle, wiping out thousand years of civilization?

We belong to a country which was a cradle of civilization and took part in creating the first civilizations known to mankind. Even in prehistoric times and before the invention of writing, Syria recorded in the amazing pottery of Tell Halaf (7000 BC onward), the awakening of the artistic spirit in mankind and their early attempts to express themselves in images and shapes. Among the first ornaments that the prehistoric artist of Tel Halaf painted on clay were the symbols of Ishtar, the Mother Goddess of love. Therefore let us prove worthy of our heritage and let us behave and act while carrying this refining legacy in our hearts and minds. Our lands witnessed in the Neolithic, the human revolution which introduced the first agricultural settlements and the domestication of animals. The first settlements or small villages led gradually to the building of the first cities, Damascus is the oldest existing city. Civilization and humanity will not depart from Syria. Even if the world chooses to forget Syria or tries to distort its picture in order to ease its conscience , even if the Super powers stand aside watching or sought to support the regime against the people, thinking in their dithering and squabbling that they might deceive themselves and deceive history. Why will not civilization forsake its birthplace? It is because Syria knows Syria and knows that the whole world is indebted to its cradles and because the children of Syria know Syria and its great heritage and indeed what is greater than that: its human legacy. For Syria and its multiple layered civilizations have made them what they are.

We have lost so far about more than 60,000people until the very earth of Syria has turned red, so are we going to spill more blood in revenge and burden our consciences even with more bloodshed while watching the young men of the Revolution turn into Killers not very different from the Shabiha of the regime and start mutilating the bodies of their enemies? No, never. The regime is not going to corrupt them as it had corrupted its killers, thus remaking them after its own image until their very own mothers disown them. Along the long road to civilization, man wrote the laws and religions inspired or dictated them so that the beast in man was tamed and people were able to live peacefully together. Therefore and in order to save Syria, we shall resort to the law in order to try the murderers, the Shabiha and the criminals and make them pay for their crimes. Throughout history Syria endured the conquerors, the usurpers, the Mongols, the murderers and the robbers who destroyed and pillaged. Yet despite all these calamities the decent common people, the simple grassroots, the labouring peaceful sons of the earth, rebuilt patiently from scratch replanted and harvested until the earth was redeemed and the children thrived and played.

It is in the nature of our people to be generous, and it is in their nature too to be decent, not forgetting that it is in their nature furthermore to forgive when they are empowered. But it is not in the nature of our people to kill the innocent and mutilate the bodies of the living and the dead. The circumstances have turned us into statisticians, documentalists, and specialists in collecting evidence who can vie even with to the best Human Rights experts. Let us persevere in these endeavours in order to put the criminals on trial when we have freed Syria and established justice. This is the only way to the future and this is the path of life to come. Let us light the way.

هل نقول لا ارى او اسمع شرا ونسكت؟
قبل يومين على صفحة ياسين الحاج صالح، دار حوار مؤلم جدا حول فيديو مسرب يصور الشبيحة الشباب وهم يرتكبون جرائم تشيب من هولها الرؤوس ضد بعض المدنيين. وابدى الكثيرون هلعهم وغضبهم المحق وهم يتابعون ويرون ما يثلم العيون والارواح رؤيته. وعندها صرخت روحي:”هل نحن مصدومون ومتالمون لان الشبيحة يفتكون بابناء شعبنا ام لان الانسان يقتل الانسان بهذه الوحشية المطلقة؟ ان السؤال الثاني هو ما يذبحني”. هؤلاء القتلة، الم تلدهم امهات من بني البشر، الم يرضعوا حليب الرحمة،؟ الم يبكوا ويضحكوا، الم يتربوا في احضان ذويهم بين اخوة واخوات وعمات وخالات دافعوا عنهم وحموهم من الاذى؟ ويضحكوا، الم يترعرعوا في احضان الانسانية وتعلموا ان افتراس لحم البشر حرام؟
ارجوكم قولوا لي اي انقلاب في موازين الزمن واي تراجع في الارتقاء يعيد المارقين امثالهم الى البدائية الهمجية والازمنة المتوحشة عندما كانت الحيوانات المفترسة تجوب الارض؟ ولهذا دعونا نحتفظ بعقولنا وبشريتنا كي نثبت تطورنا. دعونا نرى ونسمع ونحن متمسكين بانسانيتنا. ولنتساءل: ايكفي نظام واحد فاسد شرير لينزع انسانية هؤلاء الشبيحة ويعيدهم الى عصر الغاب ماحيا الالاف المؤلفة من السنين؟
نحن ننتمي الى وطن كان مهدا للانسانية وساهم في خلق اوائل الحضارات. حتى في عصور ما قبل التارخ وقبل اختراع الكتابة، سجلت سوريا في فخار تل حلف الجميل قرب الحسكة ( في القرن السابع قبل الميلاد ومابعده) يقظة الحس الفني عند الانسان واستعانته بالصورة للتعبير عن نفسه. وكانت رموز عشتار الهة الحب من اول ما سجَله فوق صلصال الارض المشوي. ولهذا دعونا نكون جديرين بارثنا الحضاري ولنتصرف حاملين رواء ماضينا في ارواحنا. هذه ارض عرفت الزراعة الاولى وتدجين الحيوانات الاولى ثم بنت مراكز تجمع الانسان الاولى في مجتمعات صغيرة سبقت مرحلة بناء المدن الاولى في تاريخ الانسانية. لن ترحل الحضارة ولا الانسانية عن ارض سوريا، ولو نسي العالم سوريا وشوه صورتها كي يقتل صوت ضميره، ولو وقفت الدول العظمى متفرجة او نصرت الظالمين، متخبطة تخبط الابله لكي تخدع التاريخ. لماذ لن ترحل الحضارة حتى ولو دمر المجرمون تحت سمع العالم ونظره معالمها واوابدها الخالدة؟ لان سوريا تعرف سوريا ولان ابناء سوريا يعرفون سوريا وارثها العظيم وانسانيتها الاعظم فدماؤهم واجسادهم وارواحهم هي من حضاراتها المتراكمة المتراصة.
لقد فقدنا حتى الآن مايقارب 60000 قتيلا على الآقل حتى اصبح الثرى في سوريا بلون الدماء فهل سنسفك المزيد من دماء الأبرياء انتقاما واخذا بالثأر ونثقل ضمائرنا برؤية شبابنا يتحولون بدورهم الى شبيحة وقتلة يذبحون المدنيين انتقاما و يمثلون باجساد اعدائهم كالحيوانات الكاسرة؟ كلا والف كلا. لن يفسدهم النظام ايضا كما افسد شبيحته ويجعلهم على صورته حتى تلعن امهاتهم ارحامنهن. في الطريق الطويل الى الحضارة وضع الانسان القوانين ونزلت بها الشرائع السماوية، فروِض الوحش في الانسان وعاش الناس بسلام. ولهذا ومن اجل انقاذ سوريا وشعبها سنحتكم الى القانون لمعاقبة القاتل والمجرم والشبيح ونجعلهم يدفعون ثمن جرائمهم. على ثرى سوريا مرَ الغزاة والتتر واللصوص والقتلة ففتكوا ودمروا، ولكن الشعب البسيط الخلوق، ابناء الارض الوادعين الكادحين عادوا وبنوا من جديد، لبنة فلبنة وحجرا فوق حجر، عادوا وزرعوا القمح والشجر والبقول حتى ضحكت الارض وسعد الاطفال وازدهرت الفنون.
من طبيعة هذا الشعب الكرم ومن طبيعة هذا الشعب النبل ومن طبيعة هذا الشعب ايضا العفو عند المقدرة ولكن ليس من طبيعته قتل البريء والتمثيل بالاجساد في الحياة والموت. ماذا ننتظر؟ لقد خلقت الظروف منا موثقين واحصائيين واختصاصيين في جمع الحقائق والادلة المصورة وغير المصورة وجعلتنا نضاهي حتى خبراء حقوق الانسان في الامم المتحدة في هذا المجال، فلنستمر دائبين من اجل تقديم القتلة للمحاكمة عندما نحرر سوريا ونقيم دولة العدالة. هذا هو طريق الحياة وطريق المستقبل فلنشعل ارواحنا نورا من اجل سوريا.
