Bearing witness: the Bayda massacre, genocide or sectarian cleansing?

Very graphic images.

They were murdered and dumped like garbage.

To all whom it may concern in our civilized world, please investigate…investigate…investigate.

O, how the world looks the other way!  If they were dogs  and cats, the world would have been enraged by now. For the love of God, tell me what happened to their Human Rights.

Forgive me for posting these images so that some of you might act as witnesses too, forgive me dead children and human beings for disturbing your nightmare, for prolonging your last moments, forgive me Alisar for forcing you to do this, forgive me life for showing the horror of death by violence. Forgive me heaven, but I have to bear witness.

Massacres at the coastal town of Banyas in Syria and Bayda, one of the villages of Banyas. I leave it to you to decide whether it is genocide or religious cleansing. The Syrian army and its militias were the perpetrators according to all available evidence.  According to the official version the army and it militias were engaged in an operation against the rebel fighters, but why kill the children and the civilians at close range, why butcher them like cattle ?

Why the children, why did they have to kill the children?

no words in this world can speak about this. they did nothing wrong at all.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />
they did nothing at all to end up here and get killed by this way.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />

Murdered

Lastly I am adding 2  videos, one by a militia leader speaking in the name of what he calls The Syrian resistance, calling to cleanse the Syrian coast of the Sunni villages and the second an investigation into  the  massacre.

After a discussion on the pages of Facebook about whether we have the right to deprive the dead of the last dignity of not exhibiting the manner and the terror of their death, thus exposing them to prying eyes,I found myself agreeing driven by compassion, but despite feeling as I did, I had to add: today I took the decision to post some of the pictures of the butchered children to my blog. It caused me the kind of pain I cannot describe to you. But whether we want it or not we have to bear witness. I fled my house after that and sat by the sea repeating to myself that  If the world is not shocked, the world will go on pretending that a genocide is not taking place in Syria.  Th victims do not inhabit their bodies any more and if their empty shells might save a few of the living, so be it.  I hope that  many people who see the images will pray for them and gently draw the veils of the temple to conceal them. May God forgive me but I had to ask death to help me in order to prevent more deaths.

Pleas believe me when I say that I have not posted the worst of the images. I have documented them instead. One was a picture of a violated baby and another of a baby half burnt.

These images were posted by activists to You Tube  and Facebook.

Dear Alisariram, it does not feel right to say thank you for posting these images, because this should never happen – but when it does, the world must take notice. I feel so powerless to help Syrians protect themselves from their own government, and I am sick with rage because my government and others are doing nothing. This is an atrocity that will haunt humanity for generations to come. Please stay safe and keep letting the world know what is happening. Assad must be stopped but until he is finished, his crimes must be documented.

Tank you Scott Calbeck for your kindness. As you have said this is an atrocity which will haunt humanity. How can we make the world understand that geography and all kinds of barriers cannot in essence separate man from man and woman from woman, that we are all one and that we are all responsible? Yes, the world must take notice.

My friend Ruthanne saw this post shared on Facebook and wrote:
    Hi Alisar,
Ruthanne tagged you in a post. You can choose if you want to add it to your timeline.

Ruthanne wrote: “i am constantly torn in the same way my friend Alisar is… many people want to be shielded from the gruesomeness of the atrocities being committed in Syria,
but i feel no moral obligation to protect them.
Rather, i feel a moral obligation to share the stories of those to whom i promised i would never be silent, the innocent victims of the regime in Syria.
My heart wants to cover their dead bodies, to bestow upon them the dignity their killers denied them while they were still alive,
but my mind says they are free now and that sharing what happened to them will not dishonor them any more than the acts that killed them.
What a shame though that these precious innocents have been lost to us while those who killed them remain in our midst & continue to be protected by the world’s silence, ambivalence & hypocrisy…Lord have mercy on us all”
    My answer was:

hank you for sharing Ruthanne in the deepest sense. I feel you supporting me and this gives me courage. Yes sometimes we have to override our sensibilities in order to bring the truth to a callous indifferent world. As long as we are driven by compassion and the desire to stop the killing, we cannot go wrong. The greatest wrong is silence when a crime has been committed.
