In memoriam: the massacre of Bayda and the slaying of children

They are there under the trees crying

They are there not up the trees laughing

Among the apples and the olives because

They are there piercing the dominion of death sobbing,

Death itself cradling the newborn and the infants lamenting

For it was not for this capturing of baby souls

That he was bidden to come and collect.

Death gapes at the wrongness of it

As if time has stood still frozen in pain

As if the earth shifted lost for a while
