I wrote this poem to invoke beauty and the life-forcesof nature, pitting them against death and annihilation.
They do not know
What noble and immeasurable strength
We have mustered against their evil.
They do not know that we speak
In the sun as it rises
And the seed as it sprouts,
That we chant with the lark
As it ascends to high heavens.
They do not know
That our slain children
Fall with the rain
Whisper in the wind
Strike at the dying of the light in lightning
And laugh in the rustling of the leaves.
They do not know, do they?
That they have burnt our souls into freedom
That they have forged our beings into sovereignty.
No, they do not know.
